Dissecting ILÜZI's "The Python"

Dissecting "The Python"

It’s not often that you effortlessly find in your email inbox a drum and bass track that makes you want to write about it, yet there it was just last week.  The appropriately named “The Python” is due to be released September 4th by its creator, Ben Corthorn, also known as ILÜZI.

ILÜZI hails from Sydney, Australia.  He is only 23 and has already made a name for himself within the dark drum and bass scene of down under.  He has performed at countless nights in his hometown of Sydney over the past few years in small, intimate club nights as well as at huge festivals.

Some notable recent accomplishments for Corthorn include his “all-original production live set for SXSW Sydney”; a recent release with Aussie label Eighty-Six, a part of TMRW Music Group; the recent launching of his “Dirty Hertz” rave collective; and “his involvement in productions used” for KRATER during New York Fashion Week.

Corthorn has really achieved a lot considering his young age.  It is obvious that he is a passionate and dedicated individual with a bright future in dark DnB, as his musical creations have a certain depth to them as I spent a decent chunk of this morning perusing his Soundcloud.

“The Python” has an introduction that is equally compelling and informative.  It begins with the sounds of a warm summer night coupled with samples taken from a documentary about pythons.  The lightest of percussive sounds slowly begins building and is soon joined by what I can best describe as the electronic, auditory representation of movement.  Think of each sound as an individually chirping pixel in a large, intricately moving creature that has control over each pixel.  That is how incredibly detailed this song is.  The percussion continues to slowly build into an energetic and fervent pre-drop breakdown that coalesces into a dark, chirpy, and hypnotic drum and bass roller.

The track is serpentine with “slithering basslines” and “sinister atmospheres”.  Corthorn’s press kit describes “The Python” as a “sonic representation of a predator lying in wait”, and I must say I agree.  Keep an eye out for this track by following  ILÜZI on his platforms:  Instagram, Facebook, and Spotify.

Big up everyone, and see you in a few weeks!
