Do Shadows Have Sounds? A Music Review

If you need the perfect soundtrack for modern living in our burdgeoning dystopia, the Shadow Sound EP by UK's Section is a perfect addition to your playlist.  Out this past month on June 18, 2025 on Rebel Music, dark rollers with notes of techstep, touches of drum funk, and huge basslines round out this cinematic ode to the golden era of drum and bass.

"Shadow Sound", the first track and the namesake of the EP, is perfectly named.  An ominous synth pad and steppa drum pattern set the tone for this dark and moody roller.  The vibe is late 1990s tech and the feel is sci-fi, complete with loads of sample ear candy, all a nod towards the dark warehouse days of yesteryear.

Section collaborates with skillful Sweetpea (go check out her latest release on Sofa Sound Bristol) on second track, "The Time Is Right".  Clean ragga chirps and comforting ambient sounds seemingly clash with an increasingly frantic pulsing that warns of an impending drop.  That drop is preceded by just the right vocal sample which then directly steers the track into a drum-forward, moody roller with a grooving bassline.  This track has notes of space and of symphony.

Third song "The Analysis" begins with simply drums and a foreboding vibe thanks to a perfectly placed synth that slowly builds into a very cinematic darky and techy roller.  Yet another variation of the steppa drum pattern makes this track more footwork-forward for the dancer while the track retains a deep and dark vibe.

Section's final track "The Exploration" is the perfect track to complete this thoughtful EP.  This moody techstep track has a straight two-step drum pattern complemented by a heavy vocal sample and a growling and deep bassline.  Horn samples are finely tweeked and elegantly placed.

If this is your sound, I highly recommend this EP.  Every track would work well in any dark drum and bass set whether your preference is more minimal and techstep or on the heaver, more neuro-influenced side.

See you back here in two weeks with a writeup about a Texas junglist legend!

Boh!
