If you are in the midwestern USA in a couple of weeks, consider swinging by Dayton, Ohio on June 21st of this year.  531 Productions is throwing a drum and bass event at Cosmo Joe's Atomic Lounge that has a lineup of true OGs.  Most of these performers have been involved in the rave scene since the 1990s, many of them DJing for that long as well.  Let’s meet them!

A true lover of all music genres, multi-genre DJ Albino Rhino of Dayton raved and DJed in the 1990s, took a very long break, and came back as of a year and a half ago.  Matthew Gwinn, aka Albino Rhino, truly enjoys sharing his love of music with people and aims to get people dancing.  He tends to focus on drum and bass and jungle, but he frequently drops house and breakbeat mixes, keeping him versatile in the electronic music world.

This father of two has a hard time keeping music to himself.  He loves to hear positive feedback about his musical selections and really enjoys sharing track titles with anyone who asks.  He aspires to play for as many people as he can.  You can catch up with Albino Rhino on his Linktree:  https://linktr.ee/Albinorhino100.  He will be spinning back to back with our next featured artist, The Dirty Hippie, at CTRL//ALT//DNB.

Not only is the The Dirty Hippie (aka Sam Conley of Dayton) a multi-genre DJ specializing in dirty breakbeats and drum and bass, he is an event promoter and the founder and head of 531 Productions, based in Dayton.  The Dirty Hippie’s DJing style includes reading the room and selecting on the fly based on the crowd’s energy.  When he plays breaks, he loves to drop remixes to get the crowd involved by dancing and singing.  Like Albino Rhino, The Dirty Hippie began his journey in the rave scene in the 1990s and also took a significant break to raise his four children.  After a 2020 divorce, he started attending events and met his queen who encouraged him to DJ and throw events again.

Conley says he brings his passion and motivation to the drum and bass scene.  He feels he has an ability to “recognize talent and personality and the ability to help other people develop their talent and push it further”.  His future plans are to continue developing 531 Productions as a crew and as a “family and community of artists that support each other in becoming the best versions of ourselves we can possibly be”.  He has a lot ideas for future events, such as series of events that are described as Broadway combined with cosplay and electronic music.  You can keep up with The Dirty Hippie and 531 Productions on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/1GV4NCpxUi/ // https://www.facebook.com/share/1HkCy2GgDo/

DJ Matt Freeman (Dayton, OH), a lover of all music genres, has been involved in the rave scene since 1994, especially in the realm of house, acid house, and techno, for which he has thrown events.  He also plays these genres in addition to darkwave, coldwave, and electronic body music (EBM).  His love of music reaches out to industrial, dark alternative dance, and drum and bass, but he doesn’t play DnB.  Until now.  Freeman has enthusiastically agreed to a one-time drum and bass performance for CTRL//ALT//DNB!

In alignment with his musical passions, Freeman and his business partner Mary created a dark alternative dance monthly event called Sanctuary where you can hear artists such as Nine Inch Nails, “Depeche Mode, She Wants Revenge, Mareux, Sextile,” and Boy Harsher.  This event is in its second year; make sure to check that out if you’re in the area.  DJ Freeman’s aspirations include a LOT of music production, so be on the lookout!  Check out his Linktree to keep tabs on him:  linktr.ee/mattfreeman.  His CTRL//ALT//DNB set is not to be missed!

Brian Arnberg, also known as DJ Troll, was the first drum and bass DJ in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, and has been involved in the rave scene since its very humble beginnings.  Because of this history, Arnberg has contributed to the scene’s rich history and has an ongoing passion for drum and bass.  He snuck into underground nightclubs as a teenager, where he “was intrigued by the nonstop dance beats and unique mixes of songs” that he already knew.  He went on to state that he “would then go home and try to figure out how the DJ’s did it using a basic tape deck and turntable”.  1989 was the year that DJ Troll picked up his first set of turntables and a mixer at a flea market.  At the time he was very into the industrial and new wave sounds of Nitzer Ebb, Meat Beat Manifesto, Depeche Mode, New Order, and Front 242 as well as New Beat, an EDM genre that fused elements of new wave, hi-NRG, EBM, and hip-hop by way of scratching.

In addition to the retro-1980s sound that drew Arnberg to becoming a DJ, he was the only DJ playing drum and bass at underground events.  He expressed that other DJs would play some breakbeat and hardcore, but they stuck to the club scene rather than the rave scene.  Arnberg stated that these other DJs never got in to the dark sounds of drum and bass and jungle while he did, and that is where his moniker DJ Troll comes from.

DJ Troll says he tends play very energetically, never sticking to any one particular sub-genre; he tends to go by mood and loves to throw old anthems in for nostalgia.  His future aspirations are to have a drum and bass residency again and to produce DnB tracks when his kids are out of school.  You can keep up with him on Facebook and Mixcloud:  https://www.facebook.com/dnbtroll // https://www.mixcloud.com/brian-arnberg

Tally G began her history with the rave scene 1996 at a Moontribe party in her hometown of El Paso, TX.  A few years later, after moving to Albuquerque, NM and continuing to rave, she bought a pair of turntables and an inexpensive mixer and started to spin progressive house, trance, and breaks under the moniker Lunarsequence.  She “retired” in 2009 to focus on other ventures, but quickly got drawn back in by way of drum and bass in 2015.  Quickly determining that her style was inclusive of all sub-genres of jungle and DnB, she noted that the darker side of the genre moved her the most.  She’s been on a roll ever since, having gained some recognition through national residencies with crews like Proper Chicago, Drum and Bass Proper, and being a resident DJ for USDNB label Boomslang Recordings.  She’s performed all over the US, bringing her unique sound to places such as Chicago, IL and Orlando, FL.  She’s a founding member of Siren Project and is currently learning music production.  Now based in San Diego, CA, she’s released many mixes and two tracks.  You can get more information on Tally G on her Linktree:  https://linktr.ee/djtallyg.

There are two more performers on the roster for CTRL//ALT//DNB:  Trenches of Columbus, OH, and King Snoopert of Dayton, OH.  Neither provided any information for this article.  A bio for Trenches was obtained from an Anita Bass post from earlier this year:

Trenches is the brainchild of music producer Tanner Sagle.  Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, his love of music started at five and began to explore electronic music as early as 2003 with an introduction to jungle and drum and bass from artists like Renegade and ShyFX and labels like Moving Shadow and Ram.  Trenches’ love of bass music in particular started around 2009, with his first introductions to dubstep.  He started producing in 2012 and began to DJ shows in 2015.

Trenches has supported a number of major acts over the course of 10 years, including touring acts such as Lil Texas, Fox Stevenson, Reaper, Liquid Stranger, Aweminus, and Bommer.  Trenches has headlined several Ohio events as well as played a slot on Clustxr music festival in West Virginia.

As for King Snoopert, he has chosen to remain mysterious until the event.  Everyone is surely looking forward to his set!
