Detroit’s drum and bass community has another reason to get together this December. On Thursday, December 10, Occasional Party and JUNGLISTCODED join forces to bring the fourth installment of the Occasional Thursday Party series to Marble Bar. The collaboration welcomes Brazilian born, UK based drum and bass heavyweight S.P.Y to the Motor City for a special holiday season gathering.
Dubbed Volume 4: The Holiday Caper, the event brings together an international lineup of artists alongside familiar faces from across the North American underground scene.
For those who have followed S.P.Y’s career, his addition to the lineup is a notable booking. The Brazilian born producer, Carlos Lima, made his first major mark on the drum and bass scene with a release on Goldie’s legendary Metalheadz imprint in 2005. He went on to establish himself as a staple of the international scene, releasing music through respected labels including Soul, RAM Records, and Hospital Records.
His relationship with Hospital Records produced several acclaimed albums, including What The Future Holds, Back To Basics, and Dubplate Style. Throughout his career, S.P.Y has demonstrated an ability to move between rolling liquid, darker underground sounds, and jungle inspired production. In 2021, he launched his own label, DARKMTTR Records, creating an outlet for his productions and collaborations across the spectrum of drum and bass.
Joining S.P.Y for the evening is Jen Symmetry, traveling from Minnesota for what the organizers describe as a Jungle Bells warm up appearance. The supporting lineup features i&i representing Florida, alongside Michigan’s own MagickTraxx and The Chancellor.
Beyond the music, Occasional Party has cultivated its own traditions that make these gatherings special. One standout feature is the vinyl giveaway, where attendees have the opportunity to win a record from the featured artist. But there’s a special twist: before taking the record home, the winner gets the opportunity to have the featured artist play it during the party. It’s a personal touch that connects the crowd directly with the music and artists they’re there to celebrate, while giving one lucky attendee a memorable addition to their record collection.
This collaboration between Occasional Party and JUNGLISTCODED brings together two forces working to connect artists and audiences through underground drum and bass culture. Volume 4 continues that spirit, combining international talent with regional artists and the community connections that keep the scene moving forward.
Taking place at Detroit’s Marble Bar, the December 10 gathering is an opportunity to catch an internationally established artist in an intimate club setting while supporting the people and organizations contributing to the North American drum and bass community.
